Most of these are fairly self-explanatory and easy to find if you just dedicate some time to looking around each of the areas in the game, but there’s a set of collectibles that is bound to give you a lot more trouble than anything else you’ve come across so far – the hidden Treasure Chests.

What Are Hidden Treasure Chests

Mario standing underneath and next to a hidden treasure chest in Super Mario RPG.

Just like the name implies, hidden Treasure Chests are a collectible dotted throughout most of the locations in the game that Mario can stumble upon by jumping in the right area, either through sheer luck or after noticing something in the environment. There are 39 of these in the game, and nearly all of them contain helpful items like Frog Coins, Croaka Colas, and more.

They’re well worth taking the time to find, especially if you have a handy guide like this one to clue you into what you’re looking for.

Before setting off on the scavenger hunt, head to the Mushroom Kingdom’s item shop and go down to the basement.

Not only will the Toad here inform you about hidden Treasure Chests, but he’ll also give you the Signal Ring accessory, which will notify you when there’s a hidden Treasure Chest nearby.

This should make things a whole lot easier on your quest.

Mushroom Kingdom Hidden Treasure Chests

Hidden Treasure Chest 1 and 2

Mario standing underneath and next to a hidden treasure chest in Super Mario RPG.

The first and second hidden Treasure Chests in Super Mario RPG are likely not the first you’ll run into unless you’re following a guide, but since they’re supposed to teach you about the mechanic mechanics, we’ll count them first.

The first two chests can be found in the Mushroom Kingdom’s Item Shop (signified by a Mushroom sign spinning near the front). Go in there and then head downstairs and talk to the Toad. He’ll teach you about hidden Treasure Chests and give you an item teaching you where they are, as well as telling you to jump in the middle of the room, which counts as the first one.

After grabbing that first one in the middle, go to the bottom right corner and jump up to grab the second one. That’s an easy enough start, right? Both chests will contain the same treasure inside: a Flower.

Hidden Treasure Chest 3

Super Mario RPG's third hidden Treasure Chest in the Mushroom Kingdom.

If you’ve ever played Super Mario RPG before then I guarantee that you know about this infamous hidden Treasure Chest. Don’t worry, though, it’s been fixed in the remake, and you can now use a wandering Toad in the hall to reach the platform pictured above. Just jump on his head and then jump up to get this chest and its Frog Coin.

In the original version of the game, you only had one chance to get this hidden Treasure Chest before it became impossible to access for the rest of the game. A pretty nasty trick considering you hadn’t even been taught about the mechanic at this point…

Bandit Way Hidden Treasure Chests

Hidden Treasure Chest 4

Super Mario RPG's Bandit Way hidden Treasure Chest.

Moving on from the Mushroom Kingdom, for the next Treasure Chest you’re going to want to make your way over to Bandit Way, the next location on the map. When you get in the area, head down to the bottom right of the map, where you previously chased after Croco.

Use the red flower to reach the platform above, and then use the yellow platforms to make your way to the right. When on the other side, use the red flower and wait till it’s pointing Northeast. Jump and you should hit the hidden Treasure Chest, netting you a Croaka Cola.

Rose Town Hidden Treasure Chests

Hidden Treasure Chest 5

Rose Town's first hidden treasure chest in Super Mario RPG.

Rose Town’s first hidden Treasure Chest is a relatively easy one to find. Simply head over to the Item Shop on the right side of town and then jump onto the shelf behind the counter. Go right up to the wall and jump to get the Treasure Chest and a Frog Coin for your troubles.

Hidden Treasure Chest 6

Rose Town's second hidden Treasure Chest in Super Mario RPG.

Just like the first hidden Treasure Chest, Rose Town’s second secret collectible is pretty easy to find. To get this one, head to the upper left corner of the town to find a house sitting on top of a cliff that seems inaccessible. Simply jump on the Toad’s head and use him to get up to the house.

Then, go upstairs to the bedroom and jump on the bed to get the Treasure Chest and another Frog Coin.

Forest Maze Hidden Treasure Chests

Hidden Treasure Chest 7The first hidden Treasure Chest in Super Mario RPG's Forest Maze.

For Super Mario RPG’s next set of hidden Treasure Chests, you’re going to need to head over to the Forest Maze area. Get used to this place, as you’ll be here for the next six collectibles. Luckily, the first hidden Treasure Chest is right where you start the level. Simply head to the little gap in the area on the left and jump up as shown above and you’ll get a Croaka Cola.

Hidden Treasure Chest 8

Super Mario RPG's second hidden Treasure Chest in the Forest Maze.

After heading into the first stump and making your way through the first underground area, you’ll find yourself on the surface once again. Right above where you jump out the stump, you’ll be able to find the next hidden Treasure Chest. Just jump up in the top left corner and you’ll grab a Frog Coin.

Hidden Treasure Chest 9

The third Hidden Treasure Chest in Super Mario RPG's Forest Maze.

After getting the last hidden Treasure Chest, move on to the next area, where you’ll see a bunch of stumps. The first one you want to enter is the one on the right in the first row. Go down here and then once you reach the underground bit, go to the left slightly and jump up to be rewarded with a Flower.

Hidden Treasure Chest 10

Super Mario RPG's fourth hidden Treasure Chest.

Next up, go to the only stump in that area that isn’t paired up and jump into it. You’ll find yourself in another underground area. Go to the top left corner of this area (as pictured above) and then jump up to get another Treasure Chest and a Croaka Cola in the process.

Hidden Treasure Chest 11

Super Mario RPG's empty hidden Treasure Chest in Forest Maze.

For one of the strangest hidden Treasure Chests in the game, you’re going to want to head to the stump on the left on the second row. Jump upwards, facing left towards the corner (as shown in the image) to grab another hidden Treasure Chest that’s completely empty but somehow also counts. That’s fun!

Hidden Treasure Chest 12

The final hidden Treasure Chest in Super Mario RPG's Forest Maze.

The final hidden Treasure Chest in Forest Maze can be found sitting right by the Save Box encountered after the Forest Junction area and right before you originally fight Bowyer. Go to the right as soon as you get to the area with the Save Box ahead, and then jump to get Forest Maze’s final Treasure Chest and a Red Essence item.

Pipe Vault Hidden Treasure Chests

Hidden Treasure Chests 13 and 14

The first hidden treasure chest in Super Mario RPG's Pipe Vault.

We’re moving on from the Forest Maze and onto a new area – Pipe Vault. This is a relatively simple area to get through, which means that its hidden Treasure Chests are pretty simple too. To get to the location of the first and second chests at once, jump into the first pipe you see when you spawn in.

Make your way over the lava platforms, then through the area after it. When you reach the Piranha Plants coming out of the pipes, go in the second one.

Super Mario RPG's second Pipe Vault hiddden Treasure Chest.

You’ll fall into an area that has a seemingly unreachable platform. Jump right at the edge of it to spawn a yellow platform. Use this to reach the upper level and jump in the two areas shown above to get two hidden Treasure Chests ticked off your list and earn two Frog Coins as well.

Yo’ster Isle Hidden Treasure Chests

Hidden Treasure Chest 15

The only hidden Treasure Chest in Yo'ster Isle, Super Mario RPG.

Well, that was a relatively quick trip after the nightmare that was the Forest Maze; we’ve got a quick pit stop in Yo’ster Isle next. This one is very easy to find. Simply go to the Save Box that’s found in the area just ahead of the “GOAL” sign on the race track, and then jump to the left of it as seen in the picture above. You’ll get a Frog Coin.

Booster Pass Hidden Treasure Chests

Hidden Treasure Chest 16

Super Mario RPG's first Booster Pass hidden Treasure Chest.

For the next few hidden Treasure Chests, we’re going to want to head over to Booster Pass. As soon as you enter the level, head on over to the left side of the first area. You’ll see an artichoke sitting on top of a platform above a wooden door. Jump on the artichoke and then leap into the air to get this Treasure Chest and a Flower.

Hidden Treasure Chest 17

Booster Pass' second hidden Treasure Chest in Super Mario RPG.

After getting that last Treasure Chest, keep moving through the first area and towards the next section of the level. Before moving onto the next screen, go to the northernmost corner of the wall (pictured above) and jump to get a Rock Candy and the 17th Treasure Chest.

Booster Tower Hidden Treasure Chests

Hidden Treasure Chest 18

The first hidden Treasure Chest in Super Mario RPG's Booster Tower.

The very first hidden Treasure Chest that you’ll find in Booster’s Tower can be found in the level’s third room, which has a bunch of platforms acting as stairs and a line of Snifits that will keep spawning and walking down the stairs. Right where the Snifits spawn, jump up in the corner to get this hidden Treasure Chest and a Frog Coin.

Hidden Treasure Chest 19

The second hidden Treasure Chest in Super Mario RPG's Booster Tower.

Keep making your way up Booster’s Tower, and you’ll use a Thwomp and a seesaw to launch yourself up to a new area. This area has our next hidden Treasure Chest. Before jumping up any of the platforms, go to the left of the first platform and jump up in the air like in the picture shown. You’ll get the 19th hidden Treasure Chest and a Frog Coin.

Hidden Treasure Chests 20 and 21

The third hidden Treasure Chest in Booster's Tower.

More than halfway through now, folks. For this next hidden Treasure Chest, keep making your way up to the level until you reach the next Save Box. In this room, you’ll see a set of yellow platforms. Jump on the yellow platforms and you’ll see a normal treasure chest floating there. Jump on top of that and then jump again to get this hidden Treasure Chest and a Goodie Bag.

The fourth hidden Treasure Chest in Super Mario RPG's Booster Tower.

After getting the 20th Treasure Chest, return to the first yellow platform. Just below it (as pictured above) you can jump into the air and get another hidden Treasure Chest, this time containing a Mushroom.

Marrymore Hidden Treasure Chests

Hidden Treasure Chest 22

The only hidden Treasure Chest in Super Mario RPG's Marrymore.

Moving on from Booster’s Tower, we have Marrymore, one of the shortest stops in Super Mario RPG. This one is pretty simple too, just head over to the Marrymore Hotel and go up to the second level. While here, run over to the pink flower and jump on the platform to the left of it to get this Treasure Chest and another Frog Coin.

Sunken Ship Hidden Treasure Chests

Hidden Treasure Chest 23

The Sunken Ship Treasure Chest in Super Mario RPG.

The Sunken Ship might only have one hidden Treasure Chest, but boy is it a doozy to get. Spawn in at the Pirate Base and then start making your way back through the area. Eventually, you’ll find yourself near a Save Box, with a room that contains a clone of Mario.

You need to line up the clone Mario with the real one in the middle of the room (as pictured above) and jump on his head to hit the box.

The best way to do this is to first hit the blue box that can be seen in the room, which reveals the location of the hidden Treasure Chest. From there, run at the top of the room and jump, which the clone Mario usually does a bit slower than you. You can then line up your jump correctly. This is an annoying one, but it’s doable with some time.

Land’s End Hidden Treasure Chests

Hidden Treasure Chest 24

The first hidden Treasure Chest in Super Mario RPG's Land's End.

After a few short stops in a row, we’re back to another land that takes up a fair amount of time. Woohoo! The first hidden Land’s End Treasure Chest can be found in the very first section of the level.

Fire yourself out of the cannon towards the yellow platform, either landing on it or jumping back on it if you go a bit further. Then, ride it to its highest point and jump up. Doing so will get you the hidden Treasure Chest and a Red Essence.

Hidden Treasure Chest 25

The second hidden Treasure Chest in Super Mario RPG's Land's End.

The next hidden Treasure Chest can be a little bit of a pain, but it’s not too difficult. Reach the second area of Land’s End and you’ll see another cannon. Jumping into this and firing yourself out of it will usually cause you to land in a hole and then be forced to fight some enemies. Before doing that, jump around in the space just ahead of the cannon to reveal a yellow platform.

Then use the cannon to shoot yourself up to that platform, before jumping forward again to create another platform that then leads up to the hidden Treasure Chest. Jump up to this one to be awarded a Croaka Cola.

Hidden Treasure Chest 26

Super Mario RPG's third hidden Treasure Chest in Land's End.

For the next hidden Treasure Chest, make your way past the second rocky area and to the first green area of Land’s End. Once you get here, head to the right immediately and look out for three purple flowers. Jump on the second flower and towards the third one and you’ll hit a Treasure Chest which has a Frog Coin inside.

Hidden Treasure Chest 27

Super Mario RPG's Keros Sewers shortcut.

This next hidden Treasure Chest is one of the hardest ones to find in the game. After getting the last one, follow the path on the right. This will take you to an area just below where you had to hop on platforms earlier. Go to the rock pictured above and then jump when the puff of smoke appears.

Once you’ve done that, you’ll find yourself in a cave of sorts. Follow the path onwards and you’ll eventually run into a Chow. This Chow is the hint as to where the hidden Treasure Chest is. Go to the north corner of the location shown in the image above and then jump to get the hidden Treasure Chest and then you’ll get a Frog Coin.

Interestingly, this location is also where you find the Keros Sewers shortcut, which we detailed in a previous guide. If you want to find the Cricket Jam then check it out here.

Hidden Treasure Chest 28

Super Mario RPG's first hidden treasure chest in Belome Temple.

The next area of Super Mario RPG is Belome Temple, which you should already know about if you’ve checked out our guide on how to find the treasure room key. Once you get past the first gate, you’ll find yourself in the room pictured above, which has a treasure chest in plain view.

Then jump up to the platform, jump on the treasure chest, and then jump again to get a hidden one that contains a Frog Coin.

Hidden Treasure Chest 29

Super Mario RPG's second hidden Treasure Chest 2.

The second hidden Belome Temple treasure chest can be found in the exact same room as the first one. Simply head down the steps and to the first corner you see (as shown in the photo above.) Jump and you’ll be rewarded with a Frog Coin.

Monstro Town Hidden Treasure Chests

Hidden Treasure Chest 30

Monstro Town's Hidden Treasure Chest in Super Mario RPG.

Monstro Town is a pretty important area for side quests later in Super Mario RPG, but it’s surprisingly sparse when it comes to hidden Treasure Chests. The one and only chest that it has can be found in the town’s exit room (as shown above), which you’ll recognise by the note stuck close to the door.

Simply jump in the bottom left corner to get this Treasure Chest and the Frog Coin inside.

Bean Valley Hidden Treasure Chests

Hidden Treasure Chest 31

The first Hidden Treasure Chest in Bean Valley, Super Mario RPG.

We’re in the final stretch of treasure hunting now, and our quest continues in Bean Valley. After spawning into the first area, take the pipe on the right side, which leads you to another area. Then, head to the left side of the screen and jump up to find the box pictured above, which contains a Frog Coin.

Hidden Treasure Chest 32

The location of Bean Valley's second and third hidden Treasure Chests in Super Mario RPG.

The next two hidden Treasure Chests in Bean Valley are easier to reach if you choose the second spawning point of the level, titled Big Vine. When you spawn in here, go through the pipe and then head down to the Save Box.

You’ll find yourself in an area with five Piranha Plants in a circle that get watered by a Shy Guy. Wait for the Shy Guy to water the Piranha Plant on the bottom right and then get in a fight with it. Once defeated, you can make your way down the pipe.

The 32nd hidden Treasure Chest in Super Mario RPG, Bean Valley.

Once down here, make your way to the left corner of the underground section. Then, jump up to hit a hidden Treasure Chest and get a Croaka Cola for your troubles.

Hidden Treasure Chest 33

The final hidden Treasure Chest in Super Mario RPG's Bean Valley.

The next hidden Treasure Chest is found in the same area as the last one we just acquired. This time, though, go for the Piranha Plant on the upper right corner of the room and then defeat it. Go down the pipe and go to the area shown in the picture above. Jump up, hit the hidden Treasure Chest, and get a Red Essence.

Nimbus Land Hidden Treasure Chests

Hidden Treasure Chest 34

The first hidden Treasure Chest in Nimbus Land in Super Mario RPG.

Just two more worlds to go until we’ve got all of Super Mario RPG’s hidden Treasure Chests. The next location we need to go to is Nimbus Land, the home of Mallow. Most of the hidden Treasure Chests here are found in the palace, but let’s head to the Item Shop first.

Here, jump on the boxes behind the shopkeeper and then leap to grab the 34th hidden Treasure Chest, which contains a Frog Coin.

Hidden Treasure Chest 35

The second hidden Treasure Chest in Nimbus Land, Super Mario RPG.

Next up, we’re going to head into the palace, which is where we find the rest of the Treasure Chests. First up, make your way through the palace by going forward a few times until you see two guards in front of a door. Go to the upper left of the room where the bird cage is, and then get the hidden Treasure Chest and its Frog Coin.

Hidden Treasure Chest 36

Super Mario RPG's 36th Hidden Treasure Chest in Nimbus Land.

After getting the 35th hidden Treasure Chest, go through the door right next to the bird cage and forward into the next room. The next hidden Treasure Chest can be found right at the bottom of the stairs (as shown in the picture above).

Hit it and then grab the Frog Coin inside. If you’re doing this before clearing the area, there will usually be a Jawful sitting underneath it.

Hidden Treasure Chest 37

The 37th hidden Treasure Chest in Super Mario RPG, found in Nimbus Land.

The next hidden Treasure Chest can be found right next to the 36th one we just found. Opposite the location of that chest will be a gap in the wall. Walk out into the darkness and then head northwest as far as you can. Jump at the right spot and you’ll get another tricky chest containing a Frog Coin.

Hidden Treasure Chest 38

Super Mario RPG's 38th hidden Treasure Chest in Nimbus Land.

The final hidden Treasure Chest in Nimbus Land is found in a different room. Go back to where the guards were standing outside the door near the birdcage and go through their door. Then go to the next area, which has a higher and lower platform.

On the right side, you’ll see a Treasure Chest floating in the air. Simply jump on top of it and then grab yet another Frog Coin.

Weapon World Hidden Treasure Chests

Hidden Treasure Chest 39

Super Mario RPG's final hidden Treasure Chest, located in Weapon World.

The very last hidden Treasure Chest that you can find in Super Mario RPG is fittingly located in Weapon World. To find the hidden Treasure Chest, spawn in at the start of the world and make your way through the first few screens until you find the area’s first Save Box.

Then, jump to the left of it to find the final Treasure Chest, which contains a… Mushroom. What a final reward.
