In April 2018, Tom, aged 54, ultimately entered a plea of guilty to a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter with the justification of acute emotional disturbance. In June 2018, he was sentenced to 40 years in jail, 25 of which will be suspended, and then five years of probation. The court did specify that if he ever broke any of the terms of his probation, he would have to serve the remainder of his sentence.
